Generally, if there is no written contract or agreement the copyright of photographs belong to the photographer.
Contracts can be written up and agreed by all involved parties (client, photographer art directors etc.). The most common scenario is that the model is paid a day rate and the images or results of the work belong to the client or photographer. This will be agreed before the shoot and models will usually be asked to sign Model Release forms on the day of the shoot. Make sure you read any documents thoroughly and understand them before you sign.
On TFP, TFCD or test shoots agree the copyright and usage terms before the shoot and make sure this is agreed in writing.
