Getting Paid?
Article Submitted By: The TMB TEAM
All negociations must always agree your payment details in writing before a shoot.

If it is the first time you have worked with a photographer then you should agree the amount and the date of payment prior to shoot. Try to negotiate cash payment on the day of the shoot, preferably on arrival. This will avoid any disputes later on down the line, especially when chasing payment.

If you are working with a well established and reputable client or photographer then accepting payment after the shoot should be fine. However, be aware that their terms of payment may include extensive waiting periods. The industry standard is 30 days. However, some magazines and publications’ terms state 30 days, starting with the day of magazine publication. Remember, if the shoot is two months prior to the publishing date, you may well end up having to wait up to 90 days (assuming that the client pays on time). It is also worth knowing that it is common practice in the publishing industry to settle their bills/issue their cheques on a set calendar month day.
