Getting My Portfolio / Model Book Started
Article Submitted By: The TMB TEAM
You’re portfolio, or as its known as in the industry, your ‘Model Book’ is basically a collection of your best photographs bound together in a book or uploaded into your profile. This is probably the single most important means of promoting yourself within the industry. Actual printed portfolios should be limited to a maximum of 25 – 35 pages, but can be as little as 4 – 6 pages. However, your Internet portfolio should be as full as possible. This is because, unlike a situation where you would be meeting somebody one on one, there are far less time constrains and a prospective client can browse your portfolio at their leisure.

Before you start to liaise with photographers etc. in regards to organizing shoots, make sure you read our ‘How To Stay Safe’ article on the TMB Advice Centre.

Build your Model Book (Portfolio) shouldn’t cost you much money, if any at all. Family snaps should be fine to approach agencies or photographers with. Reputable agencies and photographers will not need to see heavily airbrushed professional photographs to judge your look, in some respects they may even prefer to see unedited snaps.

If you intend to approach clients directly, then there is no question that good quality professional shots are the best way to promote yourself.

Use the TMB website to find photographers in your area that are willing to work with you.

Use the advice from ‘How To Stay Safe’ article on the TMB Advice Centre to make sure the Photographer is legitimate.

Organize shoots with like-minded people. View their past work as this is reflective of what you might get.

Make sure that all aspects of the shoot are discussed and agreed before the actual shoot i.e. payments (if any), the supplying of the prints or files on disk, makeup, clothes and styling etc.

Work hard on the shoot and try to maintain a positive attitude.
