In this industry there are no direct or clear paths that lead to your chosen field.
You cannot expect to go straight to the top, this seldom happens. Even the overnight success stories you hear of through the press are glamorised versions of somebody’s hard work. You must be prepared to take the long route. Set yourself a realistic time frame and realistic goals.
You are responsible for making your own career. If you do not have contacts then make them. If you haven’t had a lucky break then put yourself in a place where lucky breaks happen. In other words, motivate yourself. Get out there and do it.
There will always be people who appear to be in a more privileged position than you - all the more reason for you to work harder. Don’t make excuses and don’t be disheartened. It is a competitive industry. Therefore, only the best will get there.
We are lucky to work in a contemporary industry in which we are judged by the quality of our work. This is not an industry where ethnicity, sex or age can limit our potential. We are in a creative field where eccentricity is accepted and admired.
Before you ask yourself, ‘have I got what it takes?’ You should ask, ‘have I got the motivation and sheer determination to succeed?’ Or, more importantly, ‘do I love what I do enough to justify this commitment?’
If you are willing to devote yourself to this career, then ensure that your work, in comparison to your peers, is of a high enough quality and success will surely follow. |
